Here’s an interesting story in the news today:

Irish Nationwide is considering taking over remedial works on a north Dublin apartment complex that is ‘deteriorating’ because of building defects. [...] Council official Kieran Cunningham said that remedial works will be necessary to roofs and balconies while there are also problems with cladding. He said on-going problems are now reaching a ‘crescendo’ with the buildings’ deteriorating and that balcony railings will be in danger of falling off because of rust. [...] Coalport has still not carried out the fire safety works agreed in the complex.

You can read the full story on RTE.ie. While it makes for grim reading for owners and residents of Priory Hall, it does mean there’s a glimmer of light at the end of the tunnel. It’s not unthinkable that other banks might do the same in an effort to shift unsold apartments sooner rather than later. We spoke to NAMA last week about this issue and, while they’re not promising anything right now, we’re hopeful that they will use some of their budget to do the same.

Late last night, the MUD bill completed the Second Stage in the Dail. This means that a committee will be formed to discuss it over the summer and hopefully get it ready for a vote when they return in October. It’s a major milestone on it’s way to becoming law so we’re obviously delighted.

Update: Good news – it looks like the second stage might happen just before they close for the Summer. If it does, it means work can continue during the summer. Fingers crossed time!

The MUD Bill passed Report and Final Stage in the Seanad on Tuesday (2nd June). The Dail Second Stage will take place next Wednesday and Thursday (9th and 10th June).

If all this is double dutch to you, it means the Seanad has completed it’s work on the bill and now it moves to the Dail. It will be debated a few more times, some changes will be made and at some stage (hopefully Autumn but there are no guarantees), it will be voted on and present to the President to be passed into law. Yes, it’s slow going but it’s still moving (which is great) and they’re still listening to us and taking on board our advice.

We’re meeting regularly with the Law Society, the Department of Justice and some political parties to keep pushing the importance of the bill and to remind them of the remainder of our wishlist.

The issue of completion is still outstanding, we’re still working on that and the Dept of Environment is also looking at it (from a different angle). There are also problems with the bond, house rules and the apportionment of service charges but we’ll keep battering away at those.

You can download a copy of the bill as it stands right now.
